FMCSA operating authority comes in three main types: common, contract, and broker. A company can hold more than one.
Common authority
Lets a carrier haul regulated freight for the general public.
Contract authority
Lets a carrier haul under continuing contracts with specific shippers.
Broker authority
Lets a company arrange transportation by other carriers (brokers, not asset-based haulers).
